It’s Friday afternoon! Hope you had a good week. And maybe some turkey.
I’m mostly recovered from the cold that’s going around, and spent the second part of the week doing things with family and friends. It’s a good week to think about all the things we are thankful for! Of course, that means I didn’t get a lot of drawing or anything else done, but priorities, priorities.
Now, traditionally, it’s time to shop. I hope you didn’t wait in line at Best Buy or Walmart (where they don’t even sell Endless Monday stickers). Instead, come shop with me, with this 25% off code (for orders of 2+ items): HCSHOPBFRIDAY2022. Paid subscribers get an even bigger discount! Code will be in the cool section at the bottom of this post.
Against all odds and my dooming and glooming, Twitter is still technically up and running. Not that I can comment on how healthy the company or the backend is at the moment. No, I will not join whatever other new thing everyone’s going to. I’m not falling for that again. I’m going to sink with the ship (cut to me escaping on the Instagram helicopter)
Stuff I drew
Batra (gift draw)
Well, it’s a little on the spicier side, so I won’t burden your email inboxes with it. The link above goes to my Twitter post. I wanted to just draw some fun pics of some fun characters, so I drew Jason2Gim's OC Batra.
The above pic was the first of what was supposed to be more loose and fun drawings that I can do a lot of. So much for that (lol). But yeah, that’s the only drawing I can post this week. Whatever. You’re not my boss. (unless you’re a paid subscriber in which case, sorry, Boss.)
Other stuff
I watched the much ballyhooed Defunctland video about the Disney Channel bumper theme. Not gonna lie, even though I didn’t grow up watching the Disney Channel, I got pretty invested. It really got me thinking about the role and nature of creativity and passion within professional and commercial fields.
I played Goodbye World. It was short and sweet, but the story had an effect on me, which lingered for a while after I had exited the game. The big question every indie game dev grapples with at one point or another: “Why do I make games?”
Anyway, go play it.
So, these two things combined in the span of a couple days, gave me a strong motivation to finally get off my butt and start actually doing some game dev and build something. I’ve made some real progress in my first two days working on my first project (like already more than I’ve ever done after years of false starts), and am excited to keep going. Of course, my goal isn’t to make some masterpiece on my first go. But hey, baby steps.
I’ll be posting progress and dev logs and stuff here going forward in this weekly newsletter, so stay tuned :) The first progress preview is of some very early test stuff, so it’s only for my boss!
One would think my professional background in coding and interest in art would lend itself well to game dev, but that’s not nearly enough to make anything anyone would want to play. But… at least if I get good at the technical stuff, it might be useful in my professional career, too.
Other, other stuff
I also played the new Call of Duty (Modern Warfare 2… II?). It was gifted to me from a friend. I played through the campaign and played some multiplayer (and the Warzone battle royale mode) with friends. I hadn’t played Call of Duty multiplayer at all before, so it was a new experience for me. Playing with friends was fun, but having to endure voice chat from other people was less so. lol.
I was at the local Barnes and Noble and read through some magazines focused on writing, as a profession. It’s a whole field I know nothing about, and had no interest in until recently, so it was a really cool learning experience. I love that there are magazines for basically every trade and hobby one can just flip through and learn stuff with. Anyway, I’m hoping to learn more and get better at it over time, so that my zine will be a literary masterpiece by the end of its run. (in my dreams)
Haven’t made much progress on the December issue of the Endless Monday Monthly since last week. I’m finding myself pulled in many directions, with drawing, coding, absorbing games and media, writing, spending time with people in real life, and am quite busy. I’m feeling like there’s not a lot of time left before I need to start applying for “real” jobs, so there’s a sense of urgency, too. C’est la vie. Anyway, the issue should still be out sometime in early December. After that… we’ll play it by ear. I’m still hopefully going to do a full year’s worth, but I’m unsure if it’ll remain the same format til the end. I might have to cut down on how many physical copies I print at the very least, once real life starts taking priority again. Then it’ll really be a collector’s edition.
That’s it for now, thanks for sticking around. Have a good weekend!
