It’s been a while, friends. Remember when I said this would be weekly? That was like, 8 weeks ago! Well, the paid supporters have gotten a few more updates after that, but…
Anyway, during that time I’ve been hard at work on (as in, like, doing nothing but working on) the Endless Monday game (titled “Endless Monday: Dreams and Deadlines”) and I’m excited to show you a little preview. It’s come a long way since the super early first look back in late November.
If you haven’t seen it already, I’ve launched a Steam page for the game, which also has a trailer. You can wishlist it there for a notification when the game is released. Of course, I’ll update you here, too. Just to make double sure you know I released the game. I’ll also post about it on Twitter (if it’s still around) and Insta, and Facebook, and whatever else, and will not stop talking about it, but that’s for future you to worry about. >:)
Well if you’re already here, I figure you’ve already seen the stuff that’s on the Steam page or on my Twitter or whatever, so let’s move on. That being said, if you want to go in completely fresh with no information about what the game is about whatsoever, then I’m very flattered! Also you’ll want to stop reading here.
The game’s main character is Penny, a low level illustrator working in the Creative Organization of Entercorp Media Platforms Inc
who is working over the weekend at the office to finish her project she’s been putting off til the very last minute. The premise is that she’s still completely creatively blocked and needs inspiration to figure out how to finish her project before Monday, the deadline. Of course, she has to overcome situations and distractions from all sorts of unlikely people and places, but maybe they can inspire her as well…
Most of the game is basically a visual novel, with branching choices and dialogue and multiple endings. Originally it was planned to be a pretty short and quick VN, kind of like a comic that you could read through in 15 minutes, but then I decided to put in a little more effort and make an actual game out of it. So it goes…
As for the running time, it won’t be like 10 hours long or anything (Hey I’ve only worked on this game for like 2-3 months and I’m under a financial deadline to hurry up and release it so I can end my sabbatical and figure out the rest of my life (unless this game does reasonably well and can support me making another game (man, wouldn’t that be a dream come true))), but it also will be longer than 15 minutes. What a range.
At any time, Penny can pull up her phone to do phone things. Though, it’d be rude if she played Lumber Lass or browsed Funstafeed in the middle of a conversation…
The phone gives access to a lot of lore and conversations that might complement or affect the story in various ways. It can also distract Penny from finishing her project. Oh no!
Anyway, I’ll save the rest for when you actually play it.
It turns out it takes a long time to make a game, even a fairly short one. I’ve been learning a lot and having so much fun doing it, though, and it’s like a combination of all my various skills and interests (coding, art, writing, etc), so it’s been really rewarding to see it come together. I’m hoping the work I’m doing with this game will open a path for me to make future games in the Endless Monday universe (and in new universes!). It really does feel more like an interactive extension of my illustration/zine/comic works, rather than a “game” for “gaming,” but… I hope you enjoy this, too!
Okay, back into my gamedev hermit cave I go. Unless something else comes up, the next update here will probably be once I’m close to launch, likely sometime in March. Will you still remember me, then?
Thank you for your support and see you next time!
The Weekly* Whatever 2023-02-09
I can’t wait to meticulously pull up the phone in the middle of all the conversations!
Yeah I don't know how those "blog every day" lads do it there must be some brain hacks at work
Needless to say I always enjoy reading those whatevers, looking forward to the game👍
